Week #10

The logs arrived from Canada last Sunday and the crew of four from Oregon arrived the following day. They have been working since then. 先週の日曜日にカナダからログが到着し、翌日オレゴン州から４人のクルーも到着。着々と工事が進んでおりました。

Seen towrads the south side. This area is going to become a dining and a living area. 内側から南側（正面）を見たところ。ここはダイニング・ルームとリビング・ルームになるエリア。

Of course, they will seal the gap between the logs. ログとログのギャップは後ほどしっかりと埋められます。

Northwest corner. This will become a window of the bedroom 1.北西の角。ベッドルーム１の窓になる部分。

This is where the French door for the dining room will be installed. The black thing between the logs is an insolation. ダイニング・ルームのフレンチドアが付くところ。ログとログの間にある黒いものは小さな断熱材。

It's hard to see unless you see it closely, but there is a slot where you can put a long sponge like insolatiton in. This is seen from the side. 実際に見ないとわかりにくいが、ログの中央に細長いスポンジのような断熱材が入る隙間が彫られている。これは金太郎飴のように輪切りにした状態を、横から眺めた図。

Beams are laid nicely.天井の梁がどんどん並べられていく。

The crew is putting the logs but the frames that are supporting the logs were made by our guys. They are going to be the walls later. ログはクルーが組み立てるが、それを支えている手前のフレームはケヴィン達が先週必死に作ったもの。これが後に壁となる。

The logs used for this cabin are from the forest fire in Canada. They were left standing for several years then cut when they became completely dry. They have already cracked while standing so there is a low risk of having crack after the cabin is built.

このキャビンに使用されるログは、実はカナダで山火事にあった木たち。鎮火後何年間かそのまま（立った状態）にされ完全に乾燥後始めて伐採され、表面をきれいにして再利用されている。ひび割れもすでに起こった状態なので、キャビン建築後にログが割れる可能性はほとんどないはず。

This is the biggest log that comes on the roof. これは屋根の部分に置かれる一番大きなログ。

There was a huge hole a week ago and now it's a basement. This is where we put so much effort getting rid of water a few weeks ago. The concrete was poured and tons of soil was put back in.

一週間前に巨大な穴だったところが、地下室にあたるこの部分。１ヶ月前に私たちが一生懸命流れ込んだ水を取り除いていたところ。その後コンクリートが流し込まれ、キャビン全体の周りに大量な土が戻された。

We are going to cover the frames and make simple walls and shelvs later on for a storage purpose. There is no direct access between here and the main living are thogh.

地下室にはフレームをカバーして簡単な壁を作り、そこに棚を作って各家族の物置にする予定。上と直接は繋がっていない。

This is the floor plan. 間取りはこんな感じ。ご覧の通り、吹き抜けが多い設計。

Taken at the end of the day on Sunday. This is the south side where the entrance will be. The picture below is how it is going to look like. 日曜日の作業終了後の形。ここは南側で入口となる。下が完成予定図。

North side. The left side is the bedroom 3, the window in the middle is the bathroom, and there will be another bathroom on the right side. 北側。左がベッドルーム３になり、中央の出窓はバスルームになり、その右側も別のバスルームになる場所。



The west side. There will be a bedroom and a bathroom, a dining room in the middle and the kitchen will be where there's nothing beside two pillors right now. 西側。左側がベッドルームとバスルーム、中央がダイニングルーム、まだ何もないが２本の柱があるところまでの空間にキッチンができる。

The east side. The living room will be in the front and there will be another living area where it sticks out. 東側。手前がリビングルーム、突起した部分も別のリビングエリアとなる。

The beaver dam that Kevin moved from the other side of the path. It's getting bigger and the water level is getting so high! 例のビーバーダム。水位がこんなに高くなっていた！

Good job, guys! They were so nervous about a week ago as they thought they wouldn't be able to get things done before the logs and the crew arrived - they stayed in there for 5 days. They even worked till 11pm the day before. Everything is going well afterwards. I'm very proud of them!

お疲れ様。先週の今頃は、ログ組み立て前の準備が間に合わない！と悪夢のようだったけど（５日間山に篭った男性陣。ログが到着する前夜は１１時まで働いたあと、心配で眠れなかったらしい。）とりあえずスムーズに工事は進んでいます。

Week #9

This is not the first floor - it's just a foundation! とりあえず写真だけアップします。だんだんイメージが湧いてきました。ちなみに、この上に一階部分ができます。

Week #9 - Big week!

The logs and the crew will be here this weekend, so there are tons of things to be done before then. Lots of friends will be up there to help us.

週末にログと一緒に組み立ての作業員もやってくるため、それまでに終わらせておかないといけない作業に追われる男性陣。2人は今週いっぱい山に篭り、ケヴィンも木曜日の今朝出かけていきました。友人や兄弟なども、今日から週末にかけて応援に来てくれる予定です。

私も週末には手伝いにいくので、やっと写真をアップできそう。その頃にはどんな形になっているのか楽しみ。やっと現実味を帯びそうです。

Week #8

There was the first snow fall during last week. Kevin and I weren't there but Kim, Dave and Ford said 5 inches of snow made our big tent collapse and it was fatal. Everything got wet so they had to dry everything... (Thanks for doing ours too.)

週末なんと初雪が降ったそうです。私たちは用事があって行かなかったのですが、小さな作業をしに行った友人によると、雪が１２ｃｍほど積もったためにテントが崩壊し、置きっ放しになっていた寝袋や洋服がびしょぬれになった模様。

ところで、ログはワシントンからではなくカナダから届くそうです。(私の勘違いだった。)

Week # 7 & 8

現在素人にできることがなく、ワシントン州からログが到着する20日頃まで更に2週間お休み。プロにお願いして仕事を進めている状態で、残念ながら写真もなし。男性陣は20日から4日間会社を休んで働くそうです。

Week #6

We passed the second inspection! Nothing to do right now so no work this weekend. 今週無事に視察をパスし、金曜日に基礎部分にコンクリートを流し込みました。現在乾くのを待っているところなので、今週の作業はお休み。ボールダーでのんびりしています。

Week #5

It's been 5 weeks since the project started, and I finally went up there to help. プロジェクトが始まって５週目の週末、ついに私も建設現場へ手伝いに行って来ました。

The goal of this weekend is to get rid of water from the footer as much as possible before pouring the concrete. The river runs through the property is making it tough for us. We have to go through the inspections at certain points, and we didn't pass it the past week as it was a day after rain.

今週の課題はコンクリートを基礎部分に流し込む前に、そこに川からの水が土の中を通って流れ込まないように排水溝を作ること。工事中、各工程を終えるごとに郡の視察が入るのですが、この部分の視察の日が運悪く雨が降った翌日だったために水浸し。パスできずにやり直しになったのでした。

This is actually a hard work. We make sloped canyons around the footer and gradualy lead the water out... かなり地道な作業。木で囲われた部分の外側に溝を作り、水を少しずつ建設現場の外へ誘導。まさか自分がこんな肉体労働をするはめになるとは…。

This is the cause. Kim and I made the dam to change the direction of the water. これが現場に水が滲みこんでくる原因になっている川。手前にある堤防は、流れの方向を変えるために女性陣２人が石を運んで作ったもの。

We covered the footer this time - hope we'll pass the inspection on Tuesday! 今回は雨に備えてカバーをかけ、２日間の労働がやっと終了。火曜日の視察をパスするのを願うのみ。

Week #5 - Walking through the property

こんな林道を10分ほど進んだところに私達の所有地はあります。

これが入り口。

こんなところにもちゃんと番地があります。

ちなみに、アシャはウン○をしているわけではなく、シマリスを見つけたのでダッシュしているところ。 2日間はアシャ放し飼い状態。（そして月曜日は疲労困憊）

空と山の境界線の白い部分は雪。 あの辺りは標高３６００ｍ。

そして、キャビンの建設現場へ。

キャビンが出来上がったら、そこからの眺めはこんな感じ。

現在さまざまな色の高山植物が満開。

This is our big tent. There are 4 chambers - a room for each couple and the entrance area. こちらが私達のキャンプサイト。常設テントです。中が入り口を入れて４つに分かれているという、豪華版テント。各家族に部屋があります。

その脇には小川が流れ・・・その音を聞きながら眠りにつきます。

This is called a "goat shack". The other couples made it before we joined the ownership last year. They have been owned this land for over two years. There is no access except snowmobiles during the winter. この小屋ももちろん手作り。 冬は雪が深いため、この土地に来るにはスノーモービルが必要。

We cook our meals here. We use propane gas. 食事はこの中で。中にはプロパンガスも通っているので料理もできます。

今度は北に向かって散歩。

Behind the mountain is Keystone Ski Resort. そろそろ隣との境界線。前方の山の向こう側は、Keystoneというスキーリゾート。
