Week #15

It started snowing finally and a good news is we are close to finish sealing the cabin!ついに雪が降り始めました。とりあえず、本格的な冬到来の前に開いているいるところはふさげそうです。

Dave and Ford were up there since Friday working on the ice barrier on the roof - they laid the black sheet while they were hanging with their harness on. 共同オーナーの友人２人は金曜日からまた山篭り。（ケヴィンは土曜日の朝に行き、私は用事があり日曜日に日帰りで行きました。）友人２人はハーネスをつけて屋根にアイス･バリアという黒いゴムのようなシート張りに専念。

Lots of our friends came up to help us this weekend as we had so much to do before snow gets too deep to get to the property. 今週末はたくさん友人が手伝いに来てくれました。冬になる前にやらなければならないことが山積み。とにかく屋根を完成させて、穴をふさがないと。

They carried a lot of logs that we don't need till next summer to the basement. Thanks everyone for your help! 来年の夏まで不要なログを地下室へ。

Dave and Ford continue to work on the roof. 日曜日の午後も２人は屋根に専念。

the little openings you see on the top in the middle.真ん中の上の方の穴です。

Pat is installing one of four windows we broght from the shack. We decided to wait to order the windows till next summer but these temporary windows made our cabin very homy.窓をオーダーするのは来年の夏まで待つことにしました。その代わりに掘っ立て小屋から４つ窓を取り外して使うことに。おかげで家らしくなりました。

When we removed the windows from the shack, we also brought the kitchen stuff into the cabin. Now we can cook and we don't have to camp any more - we can sleep in our cabin!窓を取り外して小屋が使えなくなったので、中身も一緒に移動。これでキャビンで料理ができるようになり、中で寝られるようにもなったので、０度以下の気温でキャンプをしなくてよくなったわけです。やったー。

It started snowing around 2pm on Sunday. 日曜日の午後２時ごろ、ついに雪が降り始めました。

Kim is sealing one of the last cut-outs to get ready for a long winter.残り少ない穴をふさいでいるところ。

3pm - it's quickly accumulating!３時－あっという間に積もり始めました。

4pm - so glad to have windows in!４時－窓が入って本当によかった！

Week #13

大きな変化！　Log guys made big progress in a week!

Week #12

期待していたほど外観には劇的な変化はなかったものの、着実に工事は進んでいました。There was not a huge change in the way it looked from the outside as much as we had hoped for, but the construction was definitely moving forward.

天井＝２階のフロアができていた！The crew had made a ceiling = the 2nd floor!

２階に上がれるようになりました。Now we can climb upstairs.

なんとも素晴らしい眺めです。そして何よりもうれしいのは、屋根ができ始めたこと。Great view from the top. And now they are working on the roof!

構造を見るとなかなか興味深いものがあります。It is quite interesting to see the structures.

屋根となんらずにこの眺めのままならいいのに･･･　Wish we didn't have to cover this gourgeus view with the roof!

クルーがログを組み合わせる間男性陣が何をしているかというと、空いているところにこのようなフレームを作りはめ込みます。What Ford, Dave and Kevin have been doing is that they make bunch of frames for the cut-outs and put them in.

こんな感じ。 Voila!

ケヴィンの役目はそのための材木を、サイズに合わせて切ること。（そして私の役目は、その切れ端を拾い集めること。）Kevin's job is to cut the lumbars in the size so that Dave and Ford can make the frames. (and my job is to pick up small wood pieces.)

その後、フレームが入ったところは平らな板でカバーされ（右端のように）、後に窓の部分が切り取られるわけです。All the cut-outs with frames will eventually been covered, then will be smaller cut-outs for the windows.

北側の出窓の部分もフレームが入りました。ここは（非常に眺めの良い）１階のバスルームになる部分。The bay window in the north side has been fitted with frames. This is going to be a bathroom with a view!

そして、ついに山には雪が積もり始めました。夜は０℃になったので、テントで寝るときに足がなかなか温まらなくて（４時間はかかった）、私はよく眠れず。アシャも夜中に地面から私たちの上にゴソゴソと移動。Now you see the snow in the mountains. It was a freezing temperature at night and I couldn't sleep well as my feet didn't get warm for a long time（at least 4 hours). Even Asha climbed up on our sleeping bags from the ground in the middle of the night. It was cold.

Week #11

屋根をつける段階まで辿り着きました。これは正面。

We are ready to put the roof now. Seen from the front.

中もすっきり。キッチンとリビングエリアになる空間。

It's cleaned up inside. This is where the kitchen and the living will be.

ここは一階のベッドルームと２階のベッドルームができる場所。

This is where two bedrooms will be - main floor an upstairs.

時々２．５マイル（４キロ）下の民家からふらりと遊びにやってくるサム。姿が見えなくなったので帰ったと思ったら、日向で気持ち良さそうにお昼寝。Sam finds the best spot to take a nap. He lives in one of those homes 4 miles down. He sometimes spends a day with us up here!

Week #10

The logs arrived from Canada last Sunday and the crew of four from Oregon arrived the following day. They have been working since then. 先週の日曜日にカナダからログが到着し、翌日オレゴン州から４人のクルーも到着。着々と工事が進んでおりました。

Seen towrads the south side. This area is going to become a dining and a living area. 内側から南側（正面）を見たところ。ここはダイニング・ルームとリビング・ルームになるエリア。

Of course, they will seal the gap between the logs. ログとログのギャップは後ほどしっかりと埋められます。

Northwest corner. This will become a window of the bedroom 1.北西の角。ベッドルーム１の窓になる部分。

This is where the French door for the dining room will be installed. The black thing between the logs is an insolation. ダイニング・ルームのフレンチドアが付くところ。ログとログの間にある黒いものは小さな断熱材。

It's hard to see unless you see it closely, but there is a slot where you can put a long sponge like insolatiton in. This is seen from the side. 実際に見ないとわかりにくいが、ログの中央に細長いスポンジのような断熱材が入る隙間が彫られている。これは金太郎飴のように輪切りにした状態を、横から眺めた図。

Beams are laid nicely.天井の梁がどんどん並べられていく。

The crew is putting the logs but the frames that are supporting the logs were made by our guys. They are going to be the walls later. ログはクルーが組み立てるが、それを支えている手前のフレームはケヴィン達が先週必死に作ったもの。これが後に壁となる。

The logs used for this cabin are from the forest fire in Canada. They were left standing for several years then cut when they became completely dry. They have already cracked while standing so there is a low risk of having crack after the cabin is built.

このキャビンに使用されるログは、実はカナダで山火事にあった木たち。鎮火後何年間かそのまま（立った状態）にされ完全に乾燥後始めて伐採され、表面をきれいにして再利用されている。ひび割れもすでに起こった状態なので、キャビン建築後にログが割れる可能性はほとんどないはず。

This is the biggest log that comes on the roof. これは屋根の部分に置かれる一番大きなログ。

There was a huge hole a week ago and now it's a basement. This is where we put so much effort getting rid of water a few weeks ago. The concrete was poured and tons of soil was put back in.

一週間前に巨大な穴だったところが、地下室にあたるこの部分。１ヶ月前に私たちが一生懸命流れ込んだ水を取り除いていたところ。その後コンクリートが流し込まれ、キャビン全体の周りに大量な土が戻された。

We are going to cover the frames and make simple walls and shelvs later on for a storage purpose. There is no direct access between here and the main living are thogh.

地下室にはフレームをカバーして簡単な壁を作り、そこに棚を作って各家族の物置にする予定。上と直接は繋がっていない。

This is the floor plan. 間取りはこんな感じ。ご覧の通り、吹き抜けが多い設計。

Taken at the end of the day on Sunday. This is the south side where the entrance will be. The picture below is how it is going to look like. 日曜日の作業終了後の形。ここは南側で入口となる。下が完成予定図。

North side. The left side is the bedroom 3, the window in the middle is the bathroom, and there will be another bathroom on the right side. 北側。左がベッドルーム３になり、中央の出窓はバスルームになり、その右側も別のバスルームになる場所。



The west side. There will be a bedroom and a bathroom, a dining room in the middle and the kitchen will be where there's nothing beside two pillors right now. 西側。左側がベッドルームとバスルーム、中央がダイニングルーム、まだ何もないが２本の柱があるところまでの空間にキッチンができる。

The east side. The living room will be in the front and there will be another living area where it sticks out. 東側。手前がリビングルーム、突起した部分も別のリビングエリアとなる。

The beaver dam that Kevin moved from the other side of the path. It's getting bigger and the water level is getting so high! 例のビーバーダム。水位がこんなに高くなっていた！

Good job, guys! They were so nervous about a week ago as they thought they wouldn't be able to get things done before the logs and the crew arrived - they stayed in there for 5 days. They even worked till 11pm the day before. Everything is going well afterwards. I'm very proud of them!

お疲れ様。先週の今頃は、ログ組み立て前の準備が間に合わない！と悪夢のようだったけど（５日間山に篭った男性陣。ログが到着する前夜は１１時まで働いたあと、心配で眠れなかったらしい。）とりあえずスムーズに工事は進んでいます。
